The teleco's eagerly awaited 3G mobile services have now been officially launched for the Bangalore-Karnataka circle by the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., BSNL.
The next generation 3G GMS mobile service and the HSPA Broadband services were inaugurated by Telecom Minister A Raja and Karnataka's Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa. Starting tomorrow, i. e., February 20, the commercial 3G service will be available for all BSNL post paid and prepaid customers.
The telecom company's new 3G Prepaid Connections comes at just Rs. 59. The starter pack contains a U-SIM (3G Sim card), and after the proper activation of the card, the customer has to recharge with the FRC-120 for the desired 3G tariff plan, which offers the lowest tariff for voice, video calls and data usage.
After recharging with the 3G FRC-120, customers can make local voice and video calls for just 30 Paisa a minute, and all STD video calls will be chargeable at 50 paisa.
The 3G service has already been launched by BSNL across 240 cities in various Indian telecom circles.

3G low-tariff gambit will pay in 3 months: MTNL
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), the public sector telecom firm which is offering lowest rates to attract more 3G users, said the rise in subscriber numbers in the next three months would offset the revenue loss incurred due to low tariff.
The telco, with a 3G subscriber base of 2.5 lakh in Delhi and Mumbai put together, expects to double it to about 5 lakh in the next three months.
“At the moment more than revenue we are looking at mass. In the next 2-3 months the volume of subscribers on 3G will increase substantially,” Kuldip Singh, the newly appointed chairman and managing director of MTNL, said. The PSU telco invested Rs 650 crore for launching 3G services in Delhi and Mumbai.
To generate a huge subscriber base, MTNL has come out with the lowest 3G offering —Rs 10 SIM card. Its another scheme allows for a pulse rate of half-paisa-per-second for voice calls and a data download tariff of 10 KB for one paisa on Rs 149 SIM card that offers Rs 12 talk time. But observers are apprehensive of the viability of low tariffs in the long run.
Singh said, “In the short term low tariffs have adverse impact on revenue. But as usage goes up the revenue goes up, since these are service-driven offerings. We have kept the entry barrier low so that there is faster uptake. The tariffs are even lower than 2.5G.
The volume growth will help negate the initial hit due to low tariff. We expect revenue will offset the effect due to low tariff in three months.”
MTNL also plans to roll out a number of new technologies in FY2010-11. “We will launch fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology involving 1,20,000 km of fibre network in Mumbai and Delhi. We will also roll out next-generation-network (NGN) for our landline subscribers in the same fiscal,” he said.
While FTTH can carry high-speed broadband services integrating voice, data and video, NGN refers to a network that transports all information and services (voice, data and video) by encapsulating them into packets.
MTNL has lined up a capex of Rs 1,300 crore in FY10-11 which, in addition to new technologies, will be spent on rolling out additional 1 million GSM lines and 5 lakh broadband lines.
The firm has launched VDSL services for broadband users, especially companies with high-speed internet requirements, with a download speed of 20 mbps and upload speed of 6 mbps at Rs 4,999 per month.

MTNL free society intercom phone service in Mumbai
MTNL Mumbai has started a ‘society intercom’ plan for its landline telephone users. With this plan, you can use the MTNL landline phone in your house as an intercom phone to connect to other MTNL users in the same housing society, free of charge.
To make use of the MTNL intercom phone plan, there must be at least five MTNL users, who become part of a closed user group. There are two schemes for the MTNL society intercom scheme, one for existing MTNL users, and one for new users.
Existing MTNL landline (fixed phone) users do not have to pay any registration charges, installation charges or security deposit. One additional landline will be provided free of cost. This will be an incoming calls-only phone. The monthly fixed charges for this phone will be Rs 50 a month. The society can choose to keep at the society watchman’s room. Also, one MTNL phone in this intercom group (which may be kept in the society office) gets 50 calls free. New MTNL users who wish to avail of the society intercom plan must pay a security deposit of Rs 500, which is refundable. They get a new landline with free incoming calls, and unlimited intercom calls at Rs 100 a month.
MTNL users who had surrendered their MTNL connection are also eligible to get one connection under the Society Plan loyal (free intercom), if they revive their old MTNL landline under any existing landline plan (other than Society Plan), said MTNL. They can get their old number for this new connection, if it is not already in use. These customers will get one extra MTNL Centrex connection under same terms and conditions which are described above for Society Plan – Loyal.
MTNL said on its website that it can also provide broadband internet facility on the same landline, on customer request. More details on the MTNL free society intercom service can be obtained by calling the MTNL call centre at 1500 from an MTNL phone or 022-22221500 from any phone.

MSI to launch 3D notebook in mid-September
Micro-Star International (MSI) is all set to launch 3D notebooks in the market in the mid of September this year.
The notebook will support 3D with passive (polarized) glasses and shall be available at a price below $ 934. MSI’s 3D notebook would have a display 15.6 inches wide, with 120 Hz re-fresh rate and playback mode at 60fps. The processor will be Intel Core i7 series.
The new MSI 3D notebook computer will support Intel integrated GPU with Dynamic Digital Depth’s (DDD’s) TriDef 3D software to convert 2D content into 3D.
MSI plans to make these notebooks in-house and then use polarized 3D technology along with companies like Acer, LG, Fujitsu and Lenovo for their 3D notebooks.
ASUS and Toshiba will use hardware-based NVIDIA 3D Vision technology instead of polarized 3D, making notebooks high-end and expensive.
The 3D effect will be generated when users wear passive 3D glasses. The motive behind using passive glasses is to make MSI 3D notebooks less expensive. Also, as you could buy multiple glasses, several users would be able to view 3D at the same time. This would be an expensive proposition when using active shutter 3D glasses.
Earlier, there were notebooks available with 3D content through NVIDIA 3D vision technology, but were not that affordable. With MSI’s new launch, we can expect more people opting for a 3D notebook – especially as the price is reasonable enough.

Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone may come to Orange or T-Mobile in April
Sony Ericsson will release its PlayStation phone at MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2011 in Barcelona next month, “guarantees” a gadget website called gayakuman.com.
Sony Ericsson had earlier said it has a special launch planned for MWC 2011. It now appears that the new PlayStation phone will be on Orange or T-Mobile this April. Related: New Xperia phones at MWC 2011
The company recently revealed Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, the latest Xperia phone. Xperia Arc has a Bravia imaging engine powering it. Amidst notions of a gaming device to compete with Windows Phone 7 devices, which run Xbox 360 Live, Sony Ericsson had planned to introduce a gaming phone with PlayStation built in.
The Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone, which too is probably an addition to the company’s Xperia range, will be released one of these days. It has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and Qualcomm Adreno 205 graphics processor, 4-inch touchscreen capable of a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. The PlayStation phone will have a 512MB ROM, 512MB of RAM, a camera capable of recording 720p HD video, and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
Sony Ericsson’s PlayStation smartphone is said to have a 1500 mAh and has microSD and microUSB slots. According to pictures of the phone, it will be a sliding device with PlayStation controls and a joystick and touchpad. Android Gingerbread is near field communication capable, which means the new PlayStation Sony Ericsson smartphone will be able to read RFID tags and make mobile payments.
If it is released on T-Mobile, perhaps Xperia PlayStation Pocket will be LTE-enabled. High speed broadband at speeds such as the possible 21Mbps that fourth-generation (4G) technology offers, is particularly useful for online gaming. There’s no word yet on whether Sony Ericsson’s PlayStation phone will be LTE-enabled though, but since four major carriers have laid out LTE networks, it seems probably that Sony Ericsson would include LTE capability, same as it has in the Xperia Arc.
Like the Nexus One, the new PlayStation phone has an additional mic at the back of the phone for active noise cancellation. The PlayStation mobile app is to be called PlayStation Pocket just as Microsoft’s Xbox for mobiles is called Xbox Live.
The current PlayStation Pro Go portable gaming console has a 333MHz processor, 64MB RAM, 3.8-inch 480 x 272 pixel display – and runs on a very different system from a smartphone.

Aircel 3G service launch soon; 3G experience zones opened in Chennai
Aircel has inaugurated 3G experience zones in Chennai which, as the name suggests, allow people to experience third generation or 3G wireless technology for themselves.
There will be four Aircel 3G experience zones across Chennai, at Atrium2, Spencers Plaza; Fun City, Express Avenue; Atrium Citi Centre and Aircel Store PH road.
Tata DOCOMO has already announced the upcoming launch of their 3G plans for India and are heavily marketing their services. MTNL and BSNL, the established players who are already in the 3G services market are countering with their own 3G plans and announcements. Reliance 3G and Airtel 3G services are also expected to start soon; consumers are eagerly awaiting news of their tarifs and plans. Related stories: MTNL revises 3G tariffs for Delhi and BSNL unlimited 3G data plan
Aircel has still not announced any details of its 3G plans in Chennai or the rest of India.
Video calling, Aircel interactive video voice response – a video service which will show music videos and films etc, and Aircel 3G PocketInternet portal which has entertainment, news, sports and other content are some of the services that users will be able to experience at the Aircel 3G centers.
With these experience zones, Aircel has technically become the first private operator in India to offer 3G services, though only at select locations. The Aircel 3G experience zones have been inaugurated days before Tata Docomo launches 3G services for its customers on Diwali this November 5.
Aircel, the fifth largest telecom operator in India in terms of subscribers, has won 3G spectrum in 13 of the 23 telecom circles in India. The company is present in all 23 circles and has a subscriber base of 47 million. Related: 3G service providers in India
The other operators that won 3G spectrum are Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Tata Docomo, Reliance Communications, STel and Idea Cellular. While Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications will probably begin offering 3G services starting this year, Vodafone might offer 3G only next year. All the operators won spectrum in a few circles each and none of them have 3G airwave rights for Delhi and Mumbai, the most important telecom circles in the country. This means that unless they share spectrum with each other and with state run operators BSNL and MTNL, the operators will not be able to offer 3G roaming services throughout the country. Negotiations among operators for sharing spectrum are currently on.
Aircel intends to roll out 3G services commercially within two months. Aircel will spend $500 million on 3G rollout and the service will be available in Chennai and Coimbatore first.
Preparing for the future over the past few months, Aircel has released Aircel Pocket Internet, Aircel Pocket Apps store and Aircel Apollo Mobile Health Care products and value added services.

3G service providers in India gearing up for battle
Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance, Tata DOCOMO, Idea Cellular, Aircel and S Tel readying 3G services for India
The clock is ticking, and BSNL is gearing up to face competition. Third-generation cell phone services by private telecoms operators are poised to be launched in India soon. It was less than six months ago –May, to be precise – that the government announced the results of the 3G auction, where non state-backed industry players bid for telecoms circles in which they would provide 3G services. As it turned out, no operator could bag the 3G spectrum in all circles – with Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance Communications , Tata, Idea Cellular, Aircel and S Tel ending up sharing the 3G pie.
Less than a month ago, the Indian government allocated airwaves to the winning operators and agreed to amend existing license terms. According to the new conditions, private operators will be allowed to use the 3G spectrum for a period of 20 years (starting now) even if their telecoms licenses expire before that. There is a caveat, though – that the 3G service cover at least 90 percent of the relevant areas in the metros within the next five years. Soon after the allocation, Minister of IT & Communications, A. Raja, confirmed that 3G and Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) will be launched very soon.
What this means for you is that by the end of the year, if not sooner, we will have access to much faster data streaming and download speeds on your cell phones and other computing devices. But better be prepared to shell out some extra cash as the 3G services aren’t likely to come cheap, thanks to the high cost of the spectrum (the auction winners paid out a total of more than Rs. 51,000 crore), plus the limited bandwidth allocated to each operator.
Since no one player will be able to tap the entire market, Airtel, Vodafone and Idea have decided to team up and share the basic infrastructure (and thus, the cost) needed to provide 3G services across India. The trio already jointly own Indus Towers, a leading Indian tower company. Not the best news for Reliance, which will have to go the whole hog alone.
So how big exactly is the 3G opportunity in India? Well, a report by PwC anticipates that 3G services will reach rural India by 2012, with the number of subscribers in those areas likely to cross 107 million by 2015. Quite significant, considering that the total number of current telecoms subscribers in the country stands at almost 670 million, according to Raja.
Individually, telecoms operators are doing their groundwork to ensure a smooth rollout of 3G services in the respective circles allotted to them.
Vodafone 3G services
Vodafone Essar Limited, the Indian subsidiary of Vodafone Group Plc, is reportedly planning to pick a non-Chinese vendor for its 3G portfolio. The company is eyeing contracts with Nokia Siemens Networks and Ericsson for 3G equipment in India. Vodafone will provide 3G services in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (East) and West Bengal circles.Reliance makes its 3G moves
RCom has also established a 3G Innovation Lab with at Reliance ADA Group’s headquarters in Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City, near Mumbai. The Lab is based on the concept of “Open Platforms” architecture and is expected to bring together content developers, product innovators, technology platforms enablers, device manufactures and original equipment manufacturers from India and abroad to create 3G products and applications.RCom bagged 13 3G circles – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Assam, North East and Jammu & Kashmir.
Airtel’s 3G plans
The highest bidder in the 3G auction (Rs. 12,295.46 crore), Bharti Airtel, reported that it has tied up with Ericsson India, Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) and Huawei Technologies for its 3G infrastructure. Networks in seven out of Airtel’s 13 circles will be managed by Ericsson India, whereas NSN and Huawei will take care of three circles each. Each vendor will plan, design, deploy and maintain 3G-HSPA networks in its allotted circles.Airtel’s circles include Delhi, Mumbai, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh (W), Rajasthan, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, North East, Jammu & Kashmir and Assam.
Idea readying 3G service
The next telecoms operator to get its hands on 3G bandwidth was the Aditya Birla Group-owned Idea Cellular, which won licenses for 11 circles – Maharashtra, Haryana, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh (W), Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.Idea plans to launch its 3G services in the last quarter of this year but is likely to face delays in Punjab as it is awaiting certain regulatory clearances in the area, following its merger with Spice Communications last year. In related news, there have been rumors of Idea evaluating stake-sale proposals. The chief of Emirates Telecommunication Corp recently mentioned that the Middle East-based company might consider an investment in Idea Cellular.
BSNL slashes 3G rates
In anticipation of the flood of 3G services from private telecom operators, BSNL, which already offers 3G services across the country, slashed rates of its existing 3G data packages by up to 45 percent last week. The tariff for an unlimited data plan for post-paid customers has been cut from Rs. 2,499 to Rs. 1,359. Recharge vouchers for pre-paid customers will also be cheaper at Rs. 1,499 (earlier available for Rs. 2,756). The public sector undertaking has also launched new short-term validity vouchers. A voucher of Rs. 10 offers 20MB worth of data download for a day, a voucher for Rs. 25 gets you 25MB for three days and a Rs. 50 voucher offers 100MB worth of data download for seven days. Currently, BSNL’s 3G services are available in more than 500 cities in India. It sounds all nice and good, doesn’t it? But one wonders what will be the challenges posed to the telecoms industry by this 3G revolution in India, with so many private players – having coughed up such massive amounts of money to secure licenses – chartering unknown territory? Ellen Daley, vice president and practice leader at Forrester Research, sounds a note of caution. Speaking to The Economic Times recently, Daley predicted the introduction of “flat rate plans” and a furious price war to begin once the service is launched – much like what happened last year when tariff cuts affected both voice and SMS segments and nearly halved the revenue realized per minute by operators.
She added that 3G operators will have to increase their number of cell sites and enhance the backhaul infrastructure – all of this at steep costs – to support the additional traffic.
The advent of 3G services seems well-timed as India expects a number of 3G-ready devices to hit its shores as early as next month. So, if all goes according to plan and private operators get their infrastructure in place, you will soon enjoy the high-speed data revolution that’s been raging across other countries in recent years.
As you might recall, alongside the auction of 3G bandwidth in May, airwaves for wireless broadband access were also up for grabs. The winners of the broadband spectrum have yet to decide between WiMax, a technology readily available, and Long Term Evolution (LTE), for which standards are still being thrashed out.

Tata DoCoMo 3G Tariff Plans Announced
The first privately held company unveils Tariff Plans for 3G Services in India.
Tata DoCoMo had launched third-generation GSM telephony services dubbed as 3G Live in India last week. Now, the company has revealed the tariff details for Basic 3G Plans, Data Plans and even Voice+Data plans for consumers in nine Indian circles.
Telecom Talk has put up the tariff plans for TATA DoCoMo's 3G Life services.
Tata Docomo 3G services are available in all the nine circles where it has the 3G license-Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, UP (West), Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra-Goa. All plans announced would be effective from November 10 in the aforementioned nine circles. Now let's take a look at different 3G Life plans announced by Tata DoCoMo.
For those who just want to try out 3G Data plans can look out for 3G Data Top-ups which are basic data packs. To begin or experience 3G, one can go for Data Top Up of " Rs. 90 that offers 100MB usage at 21Mbps with a validity of a week. Furthermore if you want to try it out for a month (30 Days) you can go for:
- Rs. 200 Top-up with 200MB usage at 21Mbps
- Rs. 500 Top-up with 650MB usage at 21Mbps
- Rs. 2000 Top-up for unlimited usage at 21Mbps till 15GB of download and then the speed drops to 256Kbps.
Also, a typical Video Call would cost 0.66 paise per second which sums up to almost 39.6 paise per minute. We're sure you'd rather go for video chat over the Internet connection because Video calls over 3G would require more bandwidth. Unless you don't care for the bills, Video calling is going to be a costly affair.
Small Screen Voice and Data Plans:
Meant for 3G supporting smartphones, these plans are available for both Pre-paid and Post-paid Tata DOCOMO subscribers. Check out the plan tariffs below:

- In addition, there is also a plan available only on Prepaid for Rs." 350. This has 500 minutes (Local+STD) and 150 MB of 3G Data

Tata DoCoMo certainly is bit costly as compared to the BSNL 3G Plans available today. Now we shall wait for other mobile operators including two telecom stalwarts - Airtel and Vodafone to roll out 3G services and reveal their 3G tariffs in the country.

Aircel Launches 3G Zones In Chennai
Aircel has launched 3G experience zones in Chennai, to allow customers to experience high speed data connectivity. The experience zones have been launched at four locations in Chennai: Atrium2, Spencers Plaza; Fun City, Express Avenue; Atrium Citi Centre; & Aircel Store, PH road. In terms of services on offer, Aircel is offering demos of IVVR (Interactive Video Voice Response), Aircel 3G PocketInternet portal and Video calls. I’m quite keen on taking a look at how they’re going to deploy mHealth with Apollo Hospitals.
Mobile VAS company IMI Mobile* informs us that they’re powering the Interactive Voice & Video Response (IVVR; Video Portal) and 3G PocketInternet service, and have inked a deal to power full scale deployment for the service once it is rolled out. The company says that the content published will be categorized, and made discoverable through full text search, apart from other discovery mechanisms such as automatic recommendations, top rated content and most viewed. Ideally, they should look to incorporate social recommendations and sharing via Twitter, Facebook and Orkut, as well as SMS, and perhaps even surface ‘most shared’ content. Discovery of content is the main challenge for mobile services, and has been for a while.
It’s particularly interesting to note that for users with 3G SIM’s, Aircel will direct users to a separate on-deck WAP portal which will surface high data consumption content like video streaming and video on demand services. 3G, it is expected, will be all about video.
Aircel has 3G spectrum in 13 circles, and has paid Rs. 6499.46 crore for the spectrum. Remember that apart from 3G, Aircel has also paid Rs. 3438.01 crore for Broadband Wireless Access spectrum in eight circles. In Chennai (and Tamil Nadu), they have both BWA and 3G spectrum.
So that’s at least one of the 3G deals closed. Remember that OnMobile Global had acquired Dilithium Networks in the hope of closing those deals.
Which broadband gives reliable and efficient service.
Aircel to launch 3G services by early January (India)
Aircel is planning to launch 3G services in the country by early January next year.
According to Aircel Chief Operating Officer Gurdeep Singh, the company will launch 3G services by early January 2011. Aircel had bagged 3G spectrum in 13 out of the 22 telecom circles. Singh added that Aircel will comply with all government regulations.
In recent times, Aircel had given contract for launching 3G network infrastructure to equipment maker Ericsson in six circles. Other telcos, who got 3G spectrum, like Tata Docomo, the GSM arm of Tata Teleservices had already launched the services. Besides, Tata, Airtel has also announced to launch its 3G services by the end of this year.
Aircel is a mobile phone service provider in India. It offers both prepaid and postpaid GSM cellular phone coverage throughout India. Aircel is a joint venture between Maxis Communications of Malaysia and Apollo Hospital Enterprise Ltd of India. UTSB has a 74% stake in Aircel and the remaining 26% is with Apollo Hospitals. It is India’s fifth largest GSM mobile service provider with a subscriber base of over 46.51 million, as of September 30, 2010.
